Love is hard and don’t you know it.

Big beautiful and hard.

And with two big hearts inside a compendium, it’s even harder.

But you keep going, you keep it up, for the love is real and residual. Sometimes its hard to articulate, to be able to be there, to give enough, but sometimes you're on the same plane and it’s a beautiful vibration.

So here enters Love is Hard, a boppy little tune which in some kind of way, seems to book-end Magpie Diaries rasputian single from 2018, about wondering when will love come. (You know the one, with the crazy fuzz slide part and the video clip with Magpie hooking up with lots of dogs?)


LOVE IS HARD was written as two lovers cascaded their way down the winding mountain in the family tour bus, somewhere between Walcha and Wauchope.
Not necessarily in argument or distaste, but fresh from a night camping in a rest area, cooking dinner by the fire and watching the stars overhead. Listening to a distant waterfall. Waking up with smoke stained clothes and camp breath, ploughing into some fine muesli with slightly warm milk.

That kind of living must give you a healthy way of looking from the outside in.

Magpie says, This song was wholeheartedly a joint operation between me and Jess. I sung her the lines I had in my head as we rolled down the mountain, which had been ravaged by fire and flood, It was some kind of country ballad, and when we finally got to play it, she put an alternate beat to it that built the supposed hook in the song.

Magpie Diaries played it a couple times and then it was recorded live at the tail end of Swoop Season 2022, at Peppermint Grove Studios.
